A Quick Look at 2022-23

05/16/2023

After graduating six strong seniors in 2022, we knew that 22-23 would be more of a rebuilding year.  And it was.  Though our 6-14 record was not where we were hoping to be, our tri-captains Ali Mammola, Alanna Saunders, and Alex Jones did a great job leading and teaching a young and inexperienced group how to compete at the Varsity level.  WA finished at 5-5 in the Dual County League, highlighted by a close win over Cambridge that earned Coach Tones his 400th career win.  A hard-fought win on Senior Night against Shrewsbury highlighted the close of the season.  Juniors Abby Baker and Molly Harding joined sophomores Erin Keefe, Diya Jayaraman, and Faith Williams and freshmen Maddie Smith, Olivia Pillsbury, and Kaitlyn Pepin to form a solid base of players who learned and competed every game and every practice.  Spring workouts have begun, and hopefully this group, some returning JV players, and some incoming freshmen will work hard and help us continue to improve over the next year.

The best moment of the season was our road win against rival Acton.  Acton was 9-4 and on a seven game winning streak, and there was some chatter from their Twitter account about how they were a team on the rise.  However, strong defense and some big three-pointers earned us the overtime win 43-42.  Amusingly, their star player, who had hit a half-court shot to beat Cambridge two days before our game, hit a half-court shot well after the buzzer.  #joelembiid.

Alanna Saunders was named to the first All-DCL team.  The league has undergone significant changes the last few years, and this year, though still "split" into Large and Small divisions, the league created a "Super Team" that chose the top players regardless of division.  Alanna was a unanimous decision to the All-League team, and she will continue her athletic career at Middlebury College.  Congratulations to Alanna!!
