2/14/2022 - Ready for the Playoffs!

02/14/2022

As we head into the week before Feb. break, WAGB is preparing to head into the DCL Playoffs, the Mansfield tournament, and the State Tournament.

Season Overview - We won three, lost two, won seven, and lost three.  Like our winning and losing streaks, our offense has been ... streaky.  We have had several games in the high 60s, and several games in the high 20s and low 30s.  On a more positive note, our defense has been pretty strong all season.  In DCL games, we have only given up 34.4 points per game, while overall we are only giving up 40 points per game.  Though losses at highly ranked Central Catholic early and at Bridgewater-Raynham late weren't close, our other losses to strong opponents will hopefully have us prepared for the tough games on our schedule to end the season.  Our starting backcourt of Carly Davey and Abby Chambers has played very well, while bigs Kate Barnes and Alanna Saunders have also had stellar seasons.  Ali Mammola, Tamar Almasian, Kayley Carignan, and Kiani Barnard-Pratt have also provided some strong play and leadership as well.

SENIORS AND PARENTS

DCL Playoffs - The new league structure still is confusing to me, and I will withhold my opinion on it in this public forum, but the idea is as follows .... the DCL is an 11-team league, and every team plays each other once.  There is a regular season champion for the Small and the Large brackets (which have been renamed the Foley and Thorpe divisions, respectively, and WA went 5-0 vs. the Large schools.  However, an additional twist is that the last week of the regular season is devoted to a league championship tournament.  The top 4 teams play for the DCL Tournament Championship, the middle four teams have a "Silver Medal" tournament, and the bottom 3 teams play each other once in a round-robin.  Overall, we went 9-1 with the one loss being to Bedford, who also went 9-1.  But since they beat us, they are the #1 seed, WA is 2, LS is #3, and Concord is #4.  Boston Latin got screwed with Boston Public Schools shutting down for two weeks and then the 2/4 snow day because they had a chance to make the top-tier playoffs.  If they were able to play and beat L-S, there would have been a three-way tie for the 3rd and 4th seeds with LS, BL and CC all having three losses.  But it was decided that BL would be bumped to Silver Tourney.

Mansfield Tournament - WA will head to Mansfield on 2/21 to play host Mansfield in the first round of their tournament.  We have been there twice, and both times we have finished third, so we are hoping to break that streak.  Natick and Bishop Feehan play in the tournament as well, and both teams are having strong seasons.

STATE TOURNAMENT - Massachusetts has gone to an NCAA-style statewide tournament.  Teams in D1 are ranked by a system that factors in margin of victory and strength of schedule.  Fun fact - no one knows what that equation is that determines the rankings.  The current rankings are here - MIAA Power Rankings - and the state tournament schedule will be determined in the afternoon and evening of Friday, February 25th.
